Dethleffs Motorhomes in the Beginning

Dethleffs are now a well-known, established brand; known for creating a variety of premium motorhomes for you to enjoy, but it wasn’t always this way. Over 80 years ago, a man named Arist Dethleffs wanted to create a vehicle whereby he could travel around and go on his business meetings without leaving his family behind. He decided to create a sort of home on wheels; this is how the Dethleffs motorhome business was created!

It was in 1931 that the first recreational vehicle was built under the Dethleffs name. Arist took his family with him when he had to travel and named his home on wheels ‘Wohnauto’. The Dethleffs brand began by building the first caravans in a wooden shed as and when they were ordered.

Creating the first production line

In the early 1960s, Dethleffs created the first production line for caravans. Focusing on one particular model named the ‘Camper’, the company worked on making sure it was a good quality model to send out to customers. Dethleffs then branched out to include a range of 5 different models, with names such as Tourist, Comfort and Globetrotter.

Dethleffs appeared to be doing so well that they had the resources to employ over 200 staff and moved to a new factory. Creating the first motorhome, the company became the first German manufacturer to use the chassis of a Fiat Ducato for its basis. Dethleffs quickly became a credible and well-known brand for motorhomes.

Company philosophy

Dethleffs is a company that characteristically puts family first. In the mid 1990s, they put out a slogan that read ‘a friend of the family’, which has stuck ever since. They also focused on the customer more than they had ever done before, making sure everything was as it should be.
