Taking Your Motorhome Abroad

Whether it’s summer or winter, you might fancy jumping your motorhome and taking off for a week or so. The beauty of having a motorhome is you have the freedom to pack up and explore somewhere new whenever you fancy. Having a motorhome doesn’t mean that you are restricted to the UK; you can go further afield and enjoy yourself with family and friends. However, if you’re thinking of taking your motorhome abroad, there are a few things you should consider. While planning a trip abroad may take a little more preparation, it’s still very simple; it might be worth taking this advice and turning it into a checklist for your next trip!

Your motorhome is a brilliant way to see more of the world at your leisure, taking in the scenery while you drive along, but you will need to make sure that you are driving within the rules and regulations of the country you are visiting.

Correct documentation

It’s crucial to remember that you need to carry certain papers with you when travelling abroad; some of these are very obvious, such as your passport and driving license. However, there are other documents that you may forget or even not think about in the first place.

Your insurance documents might be worth taking; if you have an accident, these could be very useful! You may also want to take your MOT certificate.

You should also make sure that, on your vehicle, you have a nationality GB plate. This is a requirement!

Plan your destination

Make sure you know plenty of information about your destination; not only will you need appropriate directions to avoid stressful incidents of getting lost, but you might need to know some cultural information too. You should be courteous and polite, adhering to any rules that the country has. It’s worth doing some research before you head off so that you know what to expect.

You might want to grasp the basics of the language as this can be hugely appreciated and might get you by, particularly for reading road signs. Having some idea of what you want to do on your trip may also give you an opportunity to book tickets for sightseeing attractions too, enabling you to be organised!

Important equipment

There are certain pieces of equipment that you will need to carry with you as you are travelling in your motorhome. Different countries will have different regulations, so it’s important to check this before you go. For example, in Spain you are required to carry two warning triangles, should you need to stop by the side of the road.

In some countries it is also a requirement to carry spare headlamp bulbs, as is the case in Austria, Italy and Croatia to name a few. Most of the essential equipment you will need to pack is for the safety of you and other drivers, such as reflective jackets and a first aid kit. France requires you to carry a breathalyser to ensure you are always safe to drive.
